Here in Maine, we all know to expect more traffic due to the increase in tourism. It's a cycle that repeats annually, but this year has been deadlier than years past.
There were eight fatalities in four crashes in the first week of June alone. These are in addition to over 45 fatal accidents that happened in the first half of the year.
The deadliest of these crashes, and likely most preventable, occurred when a driver attempted to make an improper pass. His sedan collided with a Ford Explorer, killing him and his two passengers - a father and his seven-year-old son. The 73-year-old passenger in the Explorer was also killed. The rest of the passengers in the truck sustained serious injuries but they were not life-threatening.
The Sunday after that crash, two SUVs collided head on. Two motorcyclists also died in separate incidents, one lost control of his motorcycle after clipping a vehicle and the other suffered a possible medical event while riding.
This was a tragic start to the summer season, and it wasn't the last of the crashes. Two other men died in other accidents this summer. One man died after running off the road and wasn't wearing his seatbelt. The other was the victim of a hit-and-run that possibly involved alcohol.
Tragic accidents highlight the need for cautious driving
The majority of these accidents can be prevented if drivers act with more caution. Unfortunately, fatal accidents in Maine have been on the rise in the past few years. In 2017, there were 159 deaths caused by crashes, which was the highest total since 2007 when there was 176. 2014 saw a low of 113 but that number has risen each year since.
